Yield or Cargo space for more isk per hour?

Post by ISKjunky »

Hi I am going to do some tests but I thought the 1st and easiest thing to do was ask here.

I have been using Tiny miner for over 6 months now.

At this time I basically get my hulk set up to have the biggest cargo hold possible and put all t1 strips on it and go to work.

I guess I am wondering would it be better to use mining upgrades etc to get better yield?

I mine as a single hulk so no hauler most of the time. I always thought it was probably better to have more cargo and less trips to the station but I am just wondering if this is incorrect.

What do you guys think?

Can't go wrong either way. I guess if you mine the old fashioned way it's still better to maximize your cargo space but with the new "Warp from 200km" option from TinyMiner v4.4 it might be better to fit mining laser upgrades while you still have cargohold optimization rigs.

I figure that the best fit for max ice/ore per hour largely depends on the time taken to go to and from the asteroid/ice belt which is a constant (call it 'x') regardless of the fit (ignoring any possible agility loss). Logically, if travel (inc undocking/docking) time is very short then it makes sense to fit maximum upgrades to get as much ore/ice mined as quickly as possible, when travel time is very long it makes sense to fit as big a cargohold as possible.

It follows that there is a critical travel time at which yield per hour is the same whichever route you go. the trick is to see how your travel time compares to the critical travel time. You could of course mine for an hour both ways and see what you end up with ......

In my case, it takes 500 secs for 1.5 cycles to fill a Mackinaw's 6000m3 cargo hold with 2 x Ice Harvester II's and 2 x Ice Upgrade II's.
It takes 800 secs (2 cycles) to fill up an expanded Mackinaw to 8000m3 (no upgrades or rigs and 2 x cargohold expansion II's instead).

The time per trip with the upgrades is (500 + x) secs and secs/m3= (500 + x)/6000
The time per trip with the expanded cargo is (800 + x) secs and secs/m3 is (800 + x)/8000
Solving for x (where the two equations are the same) gives a critical time of 400 secs (6 minutes and 40 seconds), my travelling (and docking/unloading/undocking) time to and from the station is a lot less than 6 minutes and 40 secs so it makes sense for me to fit maximum yield upgrades. I don't worry what the yield is, I am just happy that it is the best I can get with current skills.
