Orca Option
Orca Option
So I took the plunge and bought an Orca, afterall with TM how can anyone NOT be rolling in billions.
I want to use the Orca in conjunction with the new jetcan mining feature. So my basic operational setup is:
1 x Miner in Hulk
1 x Orca setup for hauling with a cloak
2 x computers (note you can do this on one pc without any problems)
The target system for my operation is a system where there are no adjacent station systems. Let me explain, I don't feel comfortable jetcan mining in any system where there are a lot of miners. Don't want to deal with can flippers, and I want this to be a semi-afk operation, in other words I'm not sitting there tractoring jetcans everytime one is available. Besides there are a lot of untouched belts in those systems.
Method:
1. BM one end of the belt.
2. Make three copies of the same bm, remember I'm going to start my miner in system without any stations, nor are there any stations adjacent. So instead of starting IN a station I'm going to start TM from a planet.
3. Create a folder called jetcan mining and place all three bm's in that folder. Position that folder as you would normally.
4. Set number of asteroid belts to two. I guess one would work but the minimum number I've always used is two. So I've tricked TM into thinking that one of those bm's is a station. Maybe not tricked, but you get my point. One "station" bm, the other two are roid bm's.
5. Set orbit at 500 meters. The idea is to chew through the belt from one end to the other. 500 meters seems to be the best choice if you want to chew thru the belt "evenly".
6. Position the orca. I warp to 10km off the belt and cloak. I uncloak only when it's time to start tractoring.
7. Warp your miner to a planet, you are now ready to start TM. Once you start TM it will go thru the undocking motions, zooming out, etc. Then warp to the belt after which you just sit back while it chews thru the belt.
Ok a lot of work, for what? Well think about this. There is no time spent going to a station or jumping thru a gate then to a station. I'm jetmining anywhere from 13-17000m3 every 12mins (86secs x 9 mining cycles) , yeah I know it could be better. I'm not even using any of the gang mods, yet, mainly cuz I lack the skills. Nor do I use mining crystals because when I hit a belt I chew up everything.
My Orca holds 120km3 (40k corp hangar + 80k) so I'm hauling every eight cans or 96 mins at 12 mins per can avg 15k per can.
I know my yield could be better which is something I'm going to work on.
Way ahead:
1. Use two miners and the orca with gang mods.
2. Integrate my freighter into the operation.
Disclaimer: My math may be off in some places, and don't blame me if you try this and it doesn't work for you or you lose your ship

Sounds like a sweet mining operation you got there hehe. On a side note you don't need that planet, you could start TinyMiner right in the asteroid belt if you use the Jettison option.
Also the gang link mods are active modules so they won't work with your cloaking device. Might as well equip tanking mods in the mid slots.

That's good to know thanks.VanGoghGaming wrote:... On a side note you don't need that planet, you could start TinyMiner right in the asteroid belt if you use the Jettison option.

Rgr once I can use the gang mods I'll make some adjustments, maybe I'll just ss the Orca til it's time to haul. I assume as long as the Orca is in the same system as the miners they will get the benefit. In other words they don't have to be physically co-located, right?
I'm now using a Hulk with one mining upgrade II and rock specific crystals for better output. I've got another toon training for the Orca plus gang mods once he is done then I'll have both Hulks in the same belt mining different rocks.

but you can....TJRedleg wrote:Seems I can't integrate my freighter into the operation.
Didn't realize you cannot transfer stuff to a freighter while in space. Not from a jetcan or from the Orca's hangar.
Setup fleet, configure Orca for usage for fleetmembers and voila, you can access the corphangars of the Orca muhahaha
We had a great corpmine this way.
3 accounts, normally I do 2 Macks and one CMD for boost which is already pretty relaxed (them not knowing I was using jetcan option on the 2 macks and no active role whatsoever on the cmdbooster ) but this time I had;
TM on the Mack on desktop + movie
Orca+Freighter on laptop and I actually had to do something
Someone else boosting of course
864 + 40 + 89 = 993 cubes of ice stacked muhaha
I hope CCP leaves this option as it works great.
Maybe even get myself anoher char ready to fly the freighter so I can have freighter+Orca+booster all by myself and have others do all the 'hard work'
Scratch that
I just tried but it's fixed...
Also the fleetsettings now even has to be reset everytime you dock.

I don't understand, what exactly was fixed? Also why do you need a command ship when orca can boost pretty well on its own?

When the Orca first arrived freighters did not recognize the Orca corphangar as a ship in outer space, so you were able to move goods between Orca and Freighter without any problem.
No longer possible
Orca needs high slots for tractor beam, salvager and optional cloaking.
Got another account hanging in the system in cmd ship boosting that has no need for docking like the Orca has.

And how do you fit those on the orca?
