I checked through the forums and didn't see anything on this subject. I wanted to suggest that instead of control quit that the miner x out the window thus saving time on control quit confirmation. Also is it possible to set up the miner to accept a value to set critical shields to a more sensitive amount?

You can disable the Ctrl-Q confirmation dialog by ticking the small check box that says "Do not ask me again" thus making it fairly instant. The critical shield damage threshold is set at about 15% capacity, it is more than enough to allow the ship to warp out unless you're warp scrambled.
