New Member // New Player // Isk Question

Post by Ginknat »

Hello everyone ,
Im kind of a new player in Eve Online and also a new member in the forum , and after testing the Tiny Trial i really liked it so i got the Classic Version ^^
So...after reading many forums and posts , i decided to start mining to reach the Isk/H that everyone talks about , i usually use it about 5 hours/day. I got : Mining 4 ; Mining Barge 2 ; Astrogeology 4 ; Mining Upgrade 2 *The Basic for a Retriever*

*Im aiming for a Mackinaw*

My problem is :

Im mining in a High Sec (1.0) , mining Veldspar and Scordites , with my retriever
Its equipped with :
2x Strip Miners I
1x Small Capacitor Battery II ( Gonna explain why )
2x Mining Laser Upgrade I
1x Mining laser Upgrade I *Offline* ( Gonna Explain why )

With this set im getting 3.5m/h ISK , running 5 cycles of 180 secs
The major 2 problems im having with Tiny Miner and i was hoping for a Help
1) After the Mining Cycle Ends ( The Strip miner continues to mine until deactivated ) the Tiny Miner Deactivate Both Strip Miners and Lock the Asteroids AGAIN ( THE SAME asteroids ) and activate the both Strip Miners ( AGAIN ) , so its like using 4 times the Strip miners ( Blows Up my capacitator , so that why i used the Battery )

P.S: I Tried to put cycle of 360 secs to make it better but sometimes the Asteroid Breaks and only 1 Miner Keep active , while the other stay doing nothing....Tried to use the "Target Fresh asteroid with unlocking first" Option , but dont seem to have any effect , it aims the first 2 asteroids Again

2) Like i said before , the Tiny Miner is always getting the First 2 Asteroids , so they break eventually and the message "Strip Miner I deactivates as it finds the resource it was harvesting a pale shadow of its former glory" and i get 0 Ores from that Asteroid that got depleted , so its a big waste of time

I guess im doing something wrong , since people with Mackinaws can do 13m/h , with a retriever i think 3.5m is really low , so please help me =/
I take suggestions , critics , Skills Guides , Tiny Miner Settings from the Great Miners we have here in the forum

Thank You for reading
Hope you can help me

This has been discussed before so here it is again in a nutshell:

In high sec, asteroids are fairly small so they tend to pop fast. In order to improve efficiency you need to set a shorter reset lasers time in TinyMiner. The default of 90 seconds should work well in most cases.

Also if your are a new pilot and find yourself short of CPU or Capacitor then the best solution (short of training more skills) is to make good use of the 3 rig slots on the Retriever that would otherwise go unused since the introduction of the Ore Hold that made cargo rigs obsolete for mining barges!

Thank You for the Tips and the fast reply , I'm sorry to make a Topic with questions that seem to have already been discussed before.
But if you can , i would like to ask you some questions , that some people usually have :

1) How much isk per hour you think a retriever can do ? is 3.5m a good amount ? or is too low ? I know there's a Topic making the same question , but the answers were all for High Level Ships , such as Mackinaws or Hulks.
2) Is it worth going for a 0.5 region with a retriever ? Or wait to get a Mackinaw first and stay until there in the High Sec ?
3) Based on what i talked about my Ship , is there any suggestions for the Slots ? I know theres a Ship and Equipment configuration Topic , but again for High Ships
4) Optimal settings for a Retriever ( There's only for Mackinaws in the forum )

I'm sorry for asking all of this , but theres a big step between a Retriever and a Mackinaw , and since EvE is an "old" game , most here have a lot of skills , and also a lot of Knowledge to share to fill that Blank Spot between a Beginner to a High Miner.
I know this is not a place to keep asking for General Help , but would help me and the new Pilots to get a chance to get a good Isk/H with the TinyMiner.

Sorry and Thank You!

1) No, 3.5mil per hour is not a good amount to make with a Retriever. You should be able to make at least double that if not more.

2) No, it's not worth risking your Retriever in 0.5 especially since you are a new player and most likely will encounter difficulties in tanking the rats there. Stick to high sec where it's safe and the profit is still good!

3) There isn't much choice when it comes to fitting a Retriever. The low slots must absolutely contain 3 x "Mining Laser Upgrade II" modules (train for tech 2 NOW). If you find yourself short on CPU train Electronics 5 or fit a CPU rig. You could also plug in a cheap 3% mining yield hardwiring implant in slot 10. Next focus on training "Mining Barge" and "Astrogeology" to at least level 4 before going to 5 for extra mining yield.

4) To play with fittings until you get an optimum build for your character I recommend "Eve Fitting Tool" which you can get from our Eve Online Resources Page. You can plug your API key in it so that you get accurate stats for your current set of skills!

Thank You for the Tips/Guides on the Retriever :D

I got one last question related to TinyMiner , like you said :" In high sec, asteroids are fairly small so they tend to pop fast. In order to improve efficiency you need to set a shorter reset lasers time in TinyMiner"

You said that the default of 90 secs should work , but i see in the Mackinaw threads that they used 45 secs , is that because of the Capacitor ? If i get enough Capacitor Regeneration to run at 45 s , should i put it 45 ? or 90 secs is the best for the RETRIEVER ? And to increase my Isk/h i should get my Cargo as full as possible right ? Because right now is going only 50% of my ore hold
Resuming : Less time of Laser Cycle and more Cargo = More Isk Right ? And if i can handle less time ( 45 secs example ) i should go for it ?

Thank You VanGhogh :D
This Topic is already helping me A LOT in EvE
Hope it helps new players with the same problem/questions as me ^^

You need to adjust the number of cycles to approximate the total capacity of your Ore Hold as well as you can. Shorter cycles means a greater number of cycles. Personally I think 45 seconds is too little but only you can decide this after testing it yourself in your own system and seeing how it goes. If the asteroid pops then 45 seconds saved you some wasted time. It the asteroid didn't pop then you just wasted some time stopping the lasers and starting them again. There is no correct answer here, just test and go with what you think works best for you. Once you train all the proper engineering skills, the capacitor is no longer an issue.
