0.5 Tanking Hulk set up suggestions

Post by ISKjunky »

I have been out of town and very busy for like a month. WOW 2 upgrades thank you Vango

Anyway I Moved my operation to another Region I am not familiar with, and am not in familiar terratory. I found a really good spot in .5 space with lotsa good ore and not to many competators; however, I lost 2 hulks yesterday and I have not lost a ship (retriever .6) for about 4 months before that, and it was not the miner's fault. I was doing something else and was manually afk mining and forgot to launch my drones and came back to a pod lol.

Anyway, I thought I had mined in .5 space previously but maybe not. I cant seem to tank the ratts with my normal crap setup so I guess I need to put some thought into it.

The 2 I lost are
1 Hulk, 3 strip 1s (does anyone use 2s?)
4 small shield extenders
2 Cargo expander 2

I know this looks bad but it has always been fine and I am lazy

2 Hulk same set up but was using drones for defence Musta launched after they agressed or whatever

I usually dont use the critical shield check as it logs me off at lke a 10% dent in my shields which would happen fairly fast sometimes. Maybe I should try this again.

anyway I prefer to tank as I feel there is just less to worrie about.

I tried a setup with 3 extenders and 1 small shield booste it caped me out and my lasers stoped fireing before the cycle ended.

Do you guys use hardners or a different booster or ???

Maybe this is a fluke but I pvp a bit and even though I have a decent mining income I really dont want to pay for too many Hulks.

Or last, do I just need to stay in higher security systems?

Thank you for the input

First off, the critical shield option will only quit EVE when shields reach about 10% HP. That means you have already taken 90% damage. Chances are you will already be 50% in the armor by the time the ship automatically warps out. This was tested with 0.0 rats though.

Your passive tank failed because probably you don't have maxed out shield skills. Consider adding an Invulnerability field II for safety. If your cap runs out with a small shield booster then your Energy Management and Energy System Operation skills are in need of some serious attention. If you don't want to train those then the least you could do is slap on a couple of cap rechargers II. Somebody else suggested an even cheaper alternative, 2 civilian shield boosters instead. Of course if you want to go over the top then you can always get a Gisti B-type shield bosoter and an invulnerability field II. There are many possibilities, you just need to test what better suits your particular scenario.

i have two rat specific passive hardners and a small shield booster II and can perma run the booster but usually is never needed.. Keep in mind it is a bit tight in fittings but then again my skills are not all maxed out for the shield skills

and on the one that i fly when i am mining i have two elara upgrades in the lows so i have a civilian booster and can perma tank the rats in .5 space with that at 85% shields

High : 3 Strip Miner I
Med : Eutectic CAp Relay, Photon Scatering II, Invuln Field II, Gistii B-Type Small Shield Booster
Low : Damage Control II, Expanded CArgohold II
Rigs : 2 Cargohold optimization I

This is a hull tanking set-up. It can handle the occasional brutix suicide killer (you will meet them in .5). Saved my ass twice
If you want to go for full cargo, feel free to swap Damage control II with another Exp. CArgohold II

Cheers

My setup that can handle 99% of anything in empire space is cap stable and minimal skills, never had a problem with it

1 x hulk
3 x strip miner 1

2 x small shield extender 1
1 x fixed parallel link - capacitor 1 - or switch out for a cap recharger 2 if you can use them
small c5-l emergency shield overload 1

2 x expanded cargo hold 2

relevant skills wise that toon has

energy grid upgrades at level 2
energy management at level 3
energy systems op level 4
engineering level 5
shield op level 2
shiled upgrades level 1

you can obviously change the setup a lot but thats a basic cheap setup that works in 0.5's its an active shield tank and its cap stable

Just my 2cents worth, but I have used the suggested setup in Halada's Complete Miners Guide quite sucessfully. The only thing I have not survived is a suicide ganker in an Arragedon. He knew I was vulnerable to EM since I was in a .6 serpentis system and therefore tanked for Therm and Kinetic. But it held long enough for my last hobgoblin to get the kill! Also have my shield skills at lvl 4 and Shield Compensation, Management and Upgrades at 5,that helps a bit too. So train up. Get some isk and by some Gist hardeners and a small Gistii Booster and have at it.
Current setup:

Expanded Cargohold II
Mining Laser Upgrade I

Eutectic I Capacitor Charge Array
Gist B-Type Heat Dissipation Field
Gist B-Type Ballistic Deflection Field
Gistii B-Type Small Shield Booster

Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I

Medium Cargohold Optimization I
Medium Cargohold Optimization I

A bit over kill for empire, but then my pickup is lifted too.

[Hulk, Low SP maximum perma-defence]
Capacitor Flux Coil II
Damage Control II

Gistii A-Type Small Shield Booster
Shield Boost Amplifier I
Invulnerability Field II
Cap Recharger II

Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal II

Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I

Hammerhead II x5

181 sustained defence, 17.1k EHP, lowest resist is THM @ 69.4%. 119dps from the drones. 43% cap stable with my skills. I've no ESO or such trained yet.

Despite what people say, Hulks can take rather a lot of abuse before keeling over.
